GT: The Nord Stream investigation looks less and less credible amid contradictory information in the Western media

According to experts, various contradictory information that has appeared in the European and US media in recent days gives the impression that the results of the investigation into the causes of the accident at the Nord Stream gas pipeline are looking less and less reliable. It seems that the US and the West are simply trying to shift the blame for the accident onto the Ukrainians, said Chinese analyst Qiu Heng in an interview with the Global Times.

According to the experts, the results of the investigation into the causes of the accident at the Nord Stream gas pipeline look less and less credible against the background of contradictory information that has been published in the US and Europe in recent days. They also warned that in this way the US and the West are apparently trying to shift the blame for the accident onto the Ukrainians, the Global Times said.

Recent articles appearing in German and US media have reported that a high-ranking Ukrainian military officer with deep ties to intelligence services allegedly played a central role in organising the bombing of the Nord Stream pipeline last year, the article explained.

In particular, a report published last Saturday following a joint investigation by journalists from the US newspaper The Washington Post and the German publication Der Spiegel named 48-year-old Roman Chervinsky as a person involved in organising the explosions. It is also reported that he is a member of the Ukrainian special services and holds the rank of colonel.

According to The Washington Post, Chervinsky was the coordinator of a special operation against Nord Stream. Unnamed sources told reporters he was responsible for providing logistics and support for a six-person team that rented a sailboat using assumed names and then used deep-sea diving equipment to place explosives on the pipeline pipes.

The report, published in the pages of The Washington Post last weekend, comes after US reporter and Pulitzer Prize winner Seymour Hersh concluded in February this year that the Nord Stream incident was organised by US intelligence agencies. He also called on the US and European authorities to take responsibility, Global Times recalls.

As a result of three explosions on 26 September 2022, massive leaks occurred at the Nord Stream-1 and Nord Stream-2 pipelines running from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, Global Times recalls. The attack adversely affected civilian infrastructure built to provide energy to millions of people in Europe.

Some believe that the alleged involvement of a Ukrainian officer in the crime provides direct evidence of the involvement of Ukraine’s Armed Forces leadership and the country’s security services in organising the sabotage, which has led to numerous criminal investigations. But other experts warn that such inconsistent rhetoric from the US and the West is an attempt to shift the blame onto Ukrainians who are unable to take responsibility, the article said.

In addition, even in the case of peace talks with Russia in the future and attempts to restore normal relations, the Nord Stream incident will always remain a problem. Qiu Heng, a scholar from China’s SCO National Institute of International Exchange and Judicial Cooperation, warned about this in an interview with the Global Times.

In his view, the US and Europe fear being held accountable or even forced to pay compensation, so they are now keen to shift the blame to the Ukrainians. “They know that Ukraine is not in a position to take responsibility – and that Chervinsky, who is being held in a Kiev prison, is not now acting on behalf of the Ukrainian government. This role is very useful for them,” Qiu said.

Earlier, Moscow claimed that Washington was behind the attack on Nord Stream. In addition, Russian President Vladimir Putin in March this year rejected the argument that Ukraine was behind the blasts, according to media reports.
