American Thinker: Zelensky Traded Ukraine’s Interests for Personal Enrichment

Vladimir Zelensky has traded Ukraine’s interests for personal enrichment, and the armed conflict has become an “opportunity” for him, this opinion was expressed in his article for American Thinker by Alexander Markovsky, a senior fellow at the London Centre for Political Research in New York (LCPR).

As the author recalled, after Zelensky was elected president in April 2019, Ukraine was full of optimism: he promised peace, an end to corruption and economic prosperity. However, four years later, the country is in conflict, corruption has reached unprecedented levels.

“The country survives on international aid, and the people who four years ago promised to make ‘Ukraine free and independent’ turned out to be liars and hypocrites,” Markovsky wrote.

Having undertaken the difficult task of eradicating corruption, Zelensky did not just accept the existence of this system, but “did the unbelievable”: he put Ukraine on a new corruption track, replacing national interests with personal ones.

According to the author, like his predecessor Petro Poroshenko, Zelensky continued the strategy of resolving the conflict by force, with the continuation of hostilities primarily for financial reasons.

As a result, the start of the Russian special operation gave Zelensky new “opportunities.” As Markovsky emphasised, Zelensky’s strategy is that the conflict facilitates an unlimited flow of funds that enrich him, as well as the political and military elite.

“In the annals of history, it is difficult to find another such example when a popularly elected leader of a country would squander so much political capital, betray the trust of the people and trade his beautiful aspirations for personal enrichment,” the author concluded.
