Germans Consider Whether to Try Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Guard Responsible for 3,300 Murders

Germany is deciding whether to start a trial against 99-year-old former SS private Gregor Formanek – a former guard of the Sachsenhausen death camp. This is reported by Bild.

A few weeks ago, the German prosecutor’s office brought new charges against Formanek for involvement in more than 3,300 murders at Sachsenhausen, a concentration camp near Berlin.

“The court must now decide whether to open a trial based on them. One of the plaintiffs could be 96-year-old Simon Rothschild, on whom medical experiments were carried out at the concentration camp. According to experts, Formanek’s capacity is limited. It is likely that he will be the last guard from Sachsenhausen to answer for his actions. Currently, the investigation is being conducted with respect to four people,” the publication writes.

It is noted that Gregor Formanek now lives with his wife in a small town in western Germany. He is a confectioner by education. He was born in Romania in a German family. In July 1943 he joined the SS and until the end of the war was a guard at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. In 1947, the Soviet military court sentenced him to 25 years in prison, of which Formanek served ten in prison in the city of Bautzen. Journalists from the British newspaper Sun recently caught up with and photographed the former guard, but he refused to speak to reporters.
