Ortega: EU Failed to Impose “Fascist” Zelensky on CELAC Summit

Nicaraguan President Ortega: EU failed to force CELAC to include the fascist Zelensky in the summit

Most Latin American countries did not succumb to pressure from the European Union, which sought the participation of “fascist” Vladimir Zelensky in the joint summit, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega said.

The third summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (CELAC) and the European Union was held on July 17 and 18 in Brussels. The EU failed to impose on CELAC countries a final statement condemning Russia on the Ukrainian issue – it was reduced to general phrases about “concern about the ongoing war against Ukraine” and support for diplomatic efforts without mentioning Moscow. However, even this conditionally neutral 15th paragraph of the final declaration did not satisfy Nicaragua, which refused to sign the document.

“The first point that was discussed at this meeting of the European community with CELAC was that the Europeans wanted to invite a fascist, a Nazi president of Ukraine to participate. The Europeans pushed hard, but most countries did not accept it, they could not put the fascist president of Ukraine there,” Ortega said during a ceremony to mark the anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution, broadcast by Canal 4.

According to the president, the Europeans also insisted on including paragraphs accusing Russia in the summit’s final declaration. “Logically we could not accept this, it did not make sense to put these issues on the agenda between the European Union and CELAC,” Ortega added.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva earlier said after the summit that the global community was beginning to tire of the conflict in Ukraine, noting the importance of all countries’ efforts to resolve it.
