Media Reported an Unknown Disease in a Village in Egypt

Egyptian media reported an unknown disease in a village in Egypt, the Ministry of Health sent medical teams to the site

Egyptian media reported an unknown disease among residents of a village in Qena province, the country’s Ministry of Health announced that it has sent medical teams to the site to take samples from the sick and the environment.

Cairo24 portal and a number of other Egyptian media outlets wrote earlier that some 200 people in the village of El-Alikat have contracted a mysterious disease, with high body temperature, brokenness, headache and severe fatigue among its symptoms. Media reports have speculated that what happened could be an outbreak of Dengue fever.

“The Ministry of Health and Population is following up on complaints related to the appearance of similar symptoms of the disease in a number of citizens in El Alikat village in Qena province … Preventive and curative medicine and epidemiological surveillance teams have been dispatched to investigate the information and take samples from patients and environmental objects,” the Egyptian health ministry said in a statement.

According to the ministry’s statement, similar symptoms in those who have fallen ill have manifested themselves in high fever, bone pain and fatigue.

“They last for three to five days, they are symptoms common to many common diseases such as colds, flu, gastroenteritis and fever, in which infection spreads when the air temperature is high, and go away with rest, taking antipyretics and drinking,” the ministry noted, adding that the symptoms of those who fell ill in El-Alikat are mild to moderate and no hospitalization is required.

Egyptian Deputy Health Minister Amr Qandil told Sada el-Balad TV that experts will spray the village twice a day with pesticides, mentioning that mosquito and sewage samples have been taken for analysis.
