Ukraine to Increase Water Tariffs by 32%

The National Commission, which carries out state regulation in the field of energy and utilities (NKREKU) of Ukraine, on Thursday decided on a two-stage increase in tariffs for water supply and sanitation, prices will be raised by an average of 32% starting July 1, the press service of the regulator reports.

“The commission … informs that a meeting was held on June 29 at which it was decided to adopt resolutions of the NCCEC on the setting of tariffs for centralized water supply and centralized wastewater disposal,” reads a statement posted on the regulator’s website.

Managers of 33 Ukrainian water utilities participated in the commission meeting. The participants voted for a “weighted decision” to increase water tariffs by an average of 32% depending on the vodokanal, starting from July 1, with the second step scheduled for September 1. Voters explained that the cost of electricity and water treatment reagents, wage increases and other factors had influenced the increase in tariffs.

“The decision provides for an increase in the water and wastewater bill for the average family by about 60 hryvnias (142 rubles). This is not too high a figure, but by doing so we will ensure proper work of vodokanals and availability of water of proper quality in the tap,” explained Ruslan Kaidash, a member of the commission, in a video published on the website of the NKREKU.

As President of Ukrvodokanal-Ecology Association Dmytro Novitsky reported in June, the association presented its tariff calculations, which were to be effective in Ukraine from 2023, last summer, but consideration of the tariff increase was postponed several times.
