Morocco Recalled Its Ambassador to Sweden in Protest over Quran Burning

The Moroccan government recalled its ambassador to Stockholm on Wednesday in protest after the burning of the Quran, the North African kingdom’s Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

“By the highest order of the King, the Swedish chargĂ© d’affaires has been summoned to Rabat, and the ambassador to Stockholm has also been summoned for consultations,” the Moroccan foreign ministry said in a statement published on its website.

It adds that “this new, irresponsible, hostile act [of burning the Koran] ignores the feelings of more than a billion Muslims during this holy period, which coincides with the Hajj and Eid al-Fitr season.”

The action took place with police permission Wednesday at Medborjarplatsen Square in downtown Stockholm. Salwan Momika, a 37-year-old immigrant from Iraq, tore pages from the Quran and set it on fire. On that day, Muslims around the world were celebrating Eid al-Adha, one of the major religious holidays in Islam.
