Armenia Complains to the UN about Azerbaijan

Armenia has for the second time appealed to the International Court of Justice in connection with Azerbaijan’s installation of a checkpoint in the Lachin corridor on the road connecting Armenia to Karabakh. International legal affairs spokesman Yeghishe Kirakosyan told Public TV Armenia on Sunday.

” After the checkpoint was set up on the Armenia-Artsakh-Armenia road, we appealed to the International Court of Justice for the second time. Yerevan expects The Hague to impose an interim measure on Baku, demanding unimpeded movement through the Lachin corridor, until a final decision on our lawsuit is made,” Kirakosyan said.

Armenia’s Office of the Commissioner for International Legal Affairs also raised the issue of Baku not only failing to comply with interim decisions of the UN court, but also ignoring the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights.

In February, the International Court of Justice ruled to impose interim measures against Azerbaijan under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. With this ruling, the court found an imminent threat of irreparable harm to the rights of Armenians under the convention and forced Azerbaijan to take all necessary measures to ensure the unimpeded movement of citizens, vehicles and goods in both directions through the Lachin corridor.

The Lachin corridor is the only road linking Armenia and Nagorny Karabakh. On December 12, 2022, a group of Azerbaijanis, who introduced themselves as environmentalists, blocked the Lachin corridor, where the Russian peacekeeping contingent is temporarily deployed. Yerevan saw this action as a provocation by Baku aimed at creating a humanitarian disaster in the unrecognised republic. Later, Azerbaijan put up a checkpoint on the same road.
