Latvia Finished – Even TV Workers Are Ready to Go on Strike

Journalists and technicians at Latvia’s state television (LTV) plan to strike in protest against the cutbacks in television broadcasting,

As LETA news agency reported on May 20, Latvia’s public media lacks funding. In particular, LTV started the year 2023 with a slim budget, because the lion’s share of it had to be spent on paying for energy resources.

At the moment the state-owned company needs an additional 143,969 euros to balance its financial portfolio. At the same time, the State Media Council is asking the cabinet to give LTV 529,695 euros by the end of the year.

However, 154,738 euros is planned to be allocated for Latvia’s state radio solely “to cover the situation in Ukraine, including from the ground.”

As EADaily previously reported, the protest spring in Latvia began with a teachers’ strike, and the baton has been taken over by doctors. Education and medicine are in dire need of funding.
