Samnytt: Sweden’s Rampant Gang Violence Drains Police Resources

The situation in Sweden is so “tense and alarming” with rampant gang activity that the police have no time to deal with common crimes, Samnytt reports. Crimes such as theft, fraud and vandalism are not a priority for Swedish law enforcement, undermining public confidence in the Scandinavian country’s legal system.

The Swedish town of Eskilstuna, formerly known for its industrial history, is now experiencing an alarming spike in gang violence and rampant crime. Since the beginning of the year there have been 37 shootings in the town, forcing the local police to reallocate almost all their resources to combat this growing type of crime, writes Samnytt.

Matthias Forssten, head of the Södermanland police department, describes the situation as “tense and alarming.” He notes that this is not surprising given that law enforcement agencies have to focus on serious crimes, which means they have less time for other crimes, notes Samnytt.

This creates an alarming situation for the public, because the Swedish police are paying less and less attention to common crimes that directly affect the daily lives of citizens. This means that crimes – such as theft, fraud and vandalism – to which ordinary people are subjected are receding into the background, while the police try to deal with the rising tide of violence, the paper emphasizes.

The situation undermines confidence in the Swedish legal system and creates a sense of insecurity among law-abiding citizens, while sending a message to criminals that they are free to commit crimes, the article laments.
