Beijing Found no Justification for Unilateral Western Sanctions

China spoke out at the UN Security Council against a “rules-based order”

Western states are promoting a “rules-based order,” which is problematic both legally and practically. Zhang Jun, China’s permanent representative to the world organization, said this on Monday, May 15, at a UN Security Council meeting.

“The so-called rules-based order is highly problematic in legal and practical terms. There is no justification for the imposition of unilateral sanctions by the U.S. and other relevant countries,” said China’s representative to the UN.

Jun stressed that unilateral sanctions do not enjoy broad support from the international community.

On May 4, information emerged about the plans of the “G7” and the European Union to ban the import of pipeline gas from Russia on the routes through which Moscow had previously reduced supplies. This decision could also affect the northern part of the Russian pipeline Druzhba, which supplies energy resources to oil refineries in Germany and Poland.

On May 11 the publication Politico reported that all the EU countries supported toughening of energy sanctions against Russia. As it was specified, the new 11th package of anti-Russian sanctions will differ from the previous ones in that it will focus on circumventing the restrictions.
