In Latvia, despite the Russophobic Policies of the Authorities, Non-Indifferent Activists Publish the Map for Laying Flowers on 9 May

What can be done on May 9, a date still important to many Latvians, in spite of everything? As we know, this year on April 20, the birthday of Adolf Hitler, the Latvian Saeima has actually banned the celebration of Victory Day of the Red Army and the Soviet people over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 in the country. And last year the Latvian authorities, both republican and local, decided to demolish nearly a hundred Soviet war memorials erected outside burial sites. However, several graves were also moved, and one, in Škiaun, was levelled to the ground.

It is not forbidden, however, to lay flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers individually. In Latvia there are still several hundreds of war graves of Red Army soldiers, Red Fleet soldiers, border guards, partisans, underground fighters, policemen, security officers – both individual graves and large cemeteries. In addition there are graves of victims of the Nazi terror, both Nazi occupiers and their accomplices among the local population. This map shows 400 such memorials.

This is the most up-to-date list at the moment. Additional information is welcomed.
