Finland Told How the Swedes Are Profiting from the “Russian Threat”

Yle: the conflict in Ukraine has made the citizens of Sweden’s Ernsheldsvik happy

The conflict in Ukraine has made the citizens of the Swedish town of Ernsheldsvik happy, who got a job at the local factory, where BMPs are produced, wrote Yle columnist Pirjo Auvinen.

The Finnish journalist visited the factory of defense equipment manufacturer BAE Systems Hägglunds, which is located in a city of 55,000 inhabitants in northern Sweden.

“We don’t like the Ukrainian crisis at all. But it is good for the city that Hägglunds is doing well. Many jobs have appeared,” said Leif Cederlind, a resident of Ernsheldsvik.

According to the journalist, Hägglunds is the largest company in Ernsheldsvik. The CV90 BMPs and the BvS10 tracked armored all-terrain vehicles are produced here. With hundreds of new jobs, the city’s unemployment rate has dropped to six percent, below the Swedish average.

As CEO Tommi Gustafsson-Rask noted, “the growing threat from Russia” began affecting the plant nine years ago, but orders directly related to the conflict in Ukraine have begun to arrive “only now.
