FAZ: Air Quality in most European Countries is Far Below the Norm

90% of European towns and cities breathe in air with high content of hazardous substances, writes Frankfurter Allgemeine referring to the report of EEA organization. According to the EEA, air pollution in Europe results in 1,200 premature deaths of minors annually.

An increasing level of air pollution in many European countries is dangerous not only for adults but also for children and teenagers, says Frankfurter Allgemeine, referring to the results of research of European climate agency (EEA). According to the report, air pollution in Europe is the reason of 1200 premature deaths among minors every year and also promotes the development of diseases in later life.

The EEA stressed the need for additional measures to protect minors from the effects of air pollution, writes Frankfurter Allgemeine. According to EEA expert Gerardo Sanchez, the most important thing is to reduce harmful emissions in the areas that are the most polluting, such as industrial production, heating and transport. In addition, increasing the amount of green space around schools and kindergartens would be a useful measure.

Despite the progress made in recent years, the amount of harmful elements in the air in many European countries has greatly exceeded the standards recommended by the WHO, writes Frankfurter Allgemeine. The situation is particularly tense in cities: according to the EEA, 90 percent of European cities breathe air with elevated levels of pollutants.
