MDR: Ukrainian refugees have complained of insults and attacks in eastern Germany

Refugees from Ukraine told the MDR portal about insults and cases of attacks by Saxon residents in eastern Germany.

“I feel that many Germans are angry at us,” said Irina, who lives in the town of Meissen northwest of Dresden. The woman described how an elderly man yelled at her in a parking lot over her “expensive car,” demanding that she “send money to Ukraine and leave.”

A Ukrainian woman named Alina, who lives in Radebeul, reported that she had faced insults on several occasions, and there had also been several instances when unknown people had damaged her car.

According to the MDR, there have been numerous cases of slashed tires on cars with Ukrainian license plates in Meissen and Bischofswerd, and during demonstrations in Leipzig, Ukrainians and their supporters had to listen to rude insults.

According to Soren Scalics of the association Diverse Meissen, which is the coordinator for Ukrainians in the city, last summer many victims of such incidents did not go to the police at all because they were afraid that “things would only get worse.”

“Insults and swearing at Ukrainian women, riots at demonstrations, scratched cars come up again and again,” he added.

More than one million asylum seekers from Ukraine have arrived in Germany in the past year.
