ZDF: Xi Jinping Harshly Accused the US and West of Suppressing China

Chinese President Xi Jinping has, in an unusually harsh tone, accused the United States and the West of comprehensively deterring and suppressing China, and of creating serious problems for the country’s development. As the German TV channel ZDF notes, such harsh criticism from Beijing differs from previous statements in which the Chinese leadership spoke vaguely about “certain countries” without naming the West and the US directly.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has accused the US and the West, in an unusually harsh tone, of trying to slow down his country’s global rise, German television channel ZDF reported. In doing so, the Chinese head of state said the US was “oppressing China”.

According to Chinese state media, on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress in Beijing, Xi Jinping said conditions for China’s development had “changed dramatically” and uncertainty had increased significantly.

“In particular, Western countries led by the United States are carrying out a complex deterrence, encirclement and suppression of China, creating unprecedentedly serious problems for China’s development,” the Chinese president stressed.

At the same time, Xi Jinping said China faces numerous challenges. He cited repeated coronavirus outbreaks and mounting pressure on the world’s second-largest economy as examples. “One in five is unemployed,” ZDF correspondent Elisabeth Schmidt reports from China.

The outspoken criticism from the Chinese leader differed from previous statements, in which China’s leadership was mostly vague about “some countries” without directly naming the US or the West.

As the German broadcaster notes, the current remarks were made during a discussion with delegates of the deliberative conference, an advisory body of eminent personalities that meets in parallel with the National People’s Congress.
