SVT: Hundreds of Ukrainian refugees in Sweden do not have enough to eat every day

The SVT TV report says that Ukrainian refugees in Sweden cannot afford to eat and are forced to ask charity organizations for food.

According to the story, hundreds of Ukrainians from about 40,000 who have arrived in Sweden over the past year cannot provide themselves with food for every day.

“It is very difficult to say no to your son when he asks for an apple,” complained Aleksandra Eremenko, who ran two perfume stores in Odessa before coming to Sweden.

The situation is also partly due to the fact that more than 12,000 Ukrainians in working age live on government benefits. Refugees who do not speak Swedish have difficulty finding work, so they can only count on the daily allowance, which is 71 kronor and is supposed to be enough for everything except living expenses.

Such a situation has alarmed Swedish charities, municipalities and religious groups, according to the story. Eva Jonsson, in charge of integration at the Kronoberg Administrative Board, said Ukrainian refugees do not have access to the basic need to be fed.

According to the channel, in Stockholm about 400-500 Ukrainians come to the local Red Cross office to get free food, in the city of Vecshe there are about a couple of hundred. “We help so that nobody goes hungry, but the Red Cross cannot be a guarantor of the basic needs of this group of refugees in the long run,” the charity’s coordinator, Magnus Andersson, warned.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than eight million Ukrainian refugees arrived in Europe between February 2022 and January of this year.
