African Union Explains Incident with Israel Delegation at Summit

African Union commission chief: Israeli delegation expelled was not invited to summit

Israeli diplomats were not invited to the African summit, so they were expelled from the hall during the opening ceremony. The chairman of the African Union Commission, Musa Faki, said this on 19 February.

“An Israeli official was escorted out of the opening ceremony of the summit because we did not invite Israeli officials to the summit,” he said.

He also explained that the decision to grant Israel observer status had been suspended pending discussion of the matter by a specially formed committee.

The Times of Israel reported the day before, quoting the Israeli Foreign Ministry, that during the opening ceremony of the African Union summit, security guards approached the Israeli delegation and demanded it leave. The Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman called on African countries to oppose the action, stressing that it was harmful to the organisation of the African Union and the entire continent.
