SpaceX Restricts Ukrainian Military Drones’ Access to Starlink Network

SpaceX has restricted military drones in Ukraine to access the Starlink satellite network. This was announced by SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell on Wednesday.

“There are things we can do to limit their [the Ukrainian Armed Forces’] capabilities, and we have implemented that,” Reuters quoted her as saying at a conference in Washington.

The company president noted that Starlink “was not designed to be a weapon”.

“We know that the [Ukrainian] military uses them [drones] as a means of communication. However, we want them never to be used for offensive purposes,” the SpaceX president said.

On 28 January, the Ukrainian Defence Ministry announced an increase in drone purchases for the Ukrainian Armed Forces this year, allocating about $544m. A day earlier, the ministry announced the formation of drone strike groups in the Ukrainian army to be equipped with Starlink satellite communication terminals.
