Das Erste: Scholz Says Russia-NATO Conflict Unacceptable

Germany will do everything to prevent a conflict between NATO and Russia, Das Erste reported, citing a statement by Olaf Scholz. The German chancellor said that despite arms deliveries, Germany was not a party in the conflict in Ukraine: he also called for caution when commenting on the possibility of further arms deliveries to Kiev.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has stressed that despite arms deliveries, Germany is not part of the conflict in Ukraine, Das Erste has said. Speaking at a press conference during his visit to Argentina, Scholz said that Berlin would do everything to prevent an escalation that could lead to a conflict between Russia and NATO.

Furthermore, Scholz urged caution regarding further arms deliveries to Ukraine, Das Erste has said. In particular, commenting on the current requests of the Ukrainian authorities to supply aircraft, the German leader warned against sliding into a competition to “over-fulfill the plan” when it comes to arms supplies to Kiev.

The German chancellor also said that he would continue to communicate directly with Vladimir Putin in an attempt to influence his position. According to Scholz, the key to the end of the conflict lies in the hands of the Russian leader, who must withdraw Russian troops from Ukrainian territory.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, has advocated supplying combat aircraft to Ukraine, Das Erste has said. According to Heusgen, Western allies could supply Kiev with F-16s or old Soviet-type planes stored in German warehouses from the GDR era.
