Western Countries Are Losing Influence over Africa, Says Eritrean Ambassador to Russia

Eritrean Ambassador Tseggay: France and other Western countries are losing influence on Africa

France and other Western countries are losing their influence in Africa, Eritrean Ambassador to Russia Petros Tseggay told the media.

“There are several countries in Africa having a point of view like Eritrea. In the past, when the US and France dominated the continent, it was difficult for Africans to oppose. Now a different world is being built, so now they can breathe freely. It gives many countries hope that things are going in a good direction,” the ambassador said.

He added that the hardest thing to oppose was the former colonies of France, still dependent on it.

“It is not a neo-colonial attitude, but a direct colonial attitude. They have different reasoning now, young people demand a different attitude, and although many countries were led by African politicians, they have ‘little colonial Europe’ in their heads. I hope more and more countries will start to understand this. Now the French will not have the same influence as before,” said the Eritrean diplomat.

He believes this is a good thing for many Africans.

“Now they keep all their deposits in banks in France, African countries were forced to do so when they gained independence. The next generation will not accept it,” the ambassador stressed.

The next generation will not agree to this, he concluded.

The Eritrean port city of Massawa on the Red Sea and Sevastopol have signed a cooperation agreement and an exchange of delegations is planned, Eritrean ambassador Petros Tseggay said.

“We have signed a cooperation agreement between the ports of Massawa and Sevastopol, I want something to come out of this cooperation,” the ambassador said.

He noted that an exchange of delegations is planned to strengthen and develop interaction.

“In our country, however, people do not yet understand all the prospects for such cooperation. We will have an exchange of delegations now and it will develop,” the Eritrean diplomat added.
