Zelensky Rejects Russian Proposal for Christmas Ceasefire

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected Russia’s proposal for a Christmas truce. He said this in his Telegram channel.

According to him, the proposal is a “cover-up” to strengthen Russian positions on the front line.

“Russia will not be able to hide in silence its preparations for a new wave of aggression against Ukraine and Europe,” Zelensky said.

He believes that Moscow is using this truce as a “respite” in order to continue fighting “with renewed vigour”.

Earlier this day, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia called for a Christmas truce in the area of the special operation.

Also, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu to impose a ceasefire along the entire line of contact in Ukraine from 12:00 Moscow time on 6 January until 24:00 on 7 January. The Russian side called on Ukraine to reciprocate and allow people to attend services in churches on Christmas.

At the same time, the acting head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR), Denys Pushylin, warned that the Russian side would respond to possible provocations by the Ukrainian militants during the truce. He stressed that for his part, the Russian Armed Forces would cease initiatory fire.
