Focus: Berlin Has Become Germany’s Crime Hub

Berlin faces a number of problems, writes Focus Online. In particular, the German capital has become the centre of crime: in 2021 Berlin topped the rating of German cities by number of crimes per 100 thousand inhabitants. At the same time the fight against criminals is ineffective: according to statistics, in Berlin, only 45% of crimes are solved.

Berlin, the capital of the world’s fourth largest economy, is now in a terrible state, says Focus Online. On Christmas Eve, Germany’s largest city faced a wave of incidents and attacks involving emergency services and police. As a result, 16 law enforcement officers were injured and millions of euros worth of property damage was done. 103 people were detained, but all were later released.

As the publication notes, most of the incidents involved the unsafe launching of fireworks. Some people used fireworks as weapons, aiming them at crowds of people.

The Berlin police have so far refused to say why there was so much violence on the streets of Berlin on Christmas Eve, Focus Online reports. According to the German capital’s commissioner for integration, Güner Balci, people want a tougher approach from the police.

Berlin has always been a destination for the creative class and creative types, but now it is also a hub for crime, Focus Online says. In 2021, Berlin became the leader among German cities by the number of crimes per 100 thousand inhabitants. It is noted that there are many descendants of migrants among the criminals. However, the fight against crime is ineffective, writes Focus Online: many criminals in Berlin have a chance to escape punishment. For example, in 2021, the rate of solved crimes in the capital was only 45%.

Berlin’s problem is not just crime, says Focus Online. The capital city is plagued by bureaucratic chaos and financial problems: in 2021 the city’s debts amounted to about €66 billion. Furthermore, Berlin is in urgent need of an upgrade of its housing stock. There are also problems in school education: poor equipment, a shortage of teachers and a shortage of places in schools and kindergartens.
