Media Report on Disagreement Between Netanyahu and Zelensky

Axios: Netanyahu asked Zelensky for support at UN, he refused because of air defense issue

Vladimir Zelensky rejected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s request to vote against the UN General Assembly resolution on the occupation of Palestinian territories because he did not receive consent to supply Israeli arms to Ukraine, Axios portal reported, citing government sources in both countries.

According to the newspaper, the phone conversation between Netanyahu and Zelensky took place on Friday evening. Netanyahu requested that the Ukrainian envoy oppose a resolution calling for an international court to issue a legal opinion on the consequences of the occupation of Palestinian territories.

According to a Ukrainian source, Zelensky made it clear in his conversation with Netanyahu that in exchange for a vote against the resolution, he wants the new Israeli government to change its policy and provide Ukraine with defence systems against Russian attacks using ballistic missiles and drones.

As noted, Netanyahu did not make any commitments, but said he was ready to discuss Zelensky’s requests in the future. The Ukrainian president did not like the response and did not agree to vote against the resolution. He instructed his country’s ambassador to the UN not to attend the vote instead.

A senior Tel Aviv source said that Israel was also disappointed that Ukraine had simply decided to skip the vote.

In result, the UN General Assembly approved the resolution, with 87 countries voting in favour, 24 against and 53 abstaining.
