FAZ on Putin and Xi’s Videoconference: Not a Single Bad Word Against Moscow

President Xi Jinping did not say a single bad word against Moscow during his video conference with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, the Frankfurter Allgemeine reported. This is not surprising because, from a strategic point of view, Beijing is not interested in weakening Russia. And besides, the Middle Kingdom now has its own problems with the coronavirus, the German publication notes.

According to Frankfurter Allgemeine, the reaction of the Chinese side to the video conference of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin with President Xi Jinping could be described as “restrained”. Beijing has not, of course, uttered a single bad word against Moscow, which has been engaged in hostilities in Ukraine for the last ten months, but there has not been a “forced demonstration” of friendship either.

The Celestial Empire believes that there is no reason for this, according to the German newspaper. After all, it has its own problems with the coronavirus at the moment. But in general, the country is in a comfortable position. In its relations with Russia, China acts as a much stronger partner. Beijing benefits from the current conflict in the sense that Moscow will never be able to ask a higher price for its raw materials than the Chinese are willing to pay.

However, the Middle Kingdom is not strategically interested in weakening Putin, which could lead to a regime change in the Kremlin. Therefore, one should not expect Xi to be more critical of Moscow in the near future than to declare the non-acceptability of the nuclear weapons. But he will not involve himself in the Ukrainian conflict, concluded Frankfurter Allgemeine.
