Scholz in his New Year address promised to support Ukraine despite the consequences
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in his New Year’s address to his compatriots, pledged to support Kiev as well as EU and NATO unity despite the consequences of the events in Ukraine faced by the citizens of Germany.
“Ukrainians are bravely defending their homeland, also thanks to our help. And we will continue to support Ukraine,” Scholz stressed, beginning his New Year’s Eve speech by mentioning that a “difficult year” is now coming to an end.
According to the chancellor, German residents experience the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine every day “when shopping at the supermarket, at the gas station or when paying their electricity or gas bills. But at the same time, this is also a year of “cohesion and strength,” Scholz said.
“The European Union and NATO are not divided, as they have been during various crises in the past. They are more united than ever,” he stressed. He said the government will continue to solve current problems and Scholz calls for “sticking together” next year as well.
Since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine, the West has increased sanctions pressure on Russia, leading to higher electricity, fuel and food prices in Europe and the U.S. Meanwhile, as Russian President Vladimir Putin has pointed out, the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy of the West, and sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy.
