German Sociologist Schneider: Germany Risks Becoming a ” beggar country ” Because of the Crisis

German sociologist Ulrich Schneider warned in an interview with Focus magazine that Germany is on the road to becoming a “beggar country”.

The soaring energy prices and the rising cost of living threaten a “breakdown” of society, which could have dramatic consequences for Germany, he said. “The sharp rise in the cost of living has led to a rise in poverty in Germany. People who are poor in one way or another have become even poorer, their purchasing power has further diminished, they no longer know how to get by financially for a month,” the sociologist warned.

He pointed out that the middle class was also beginning to struggle. “There are no reserves. A faulty washing machine or necessary car repairs quickly turn into a disaster,” Schneider explained. For those who are still “afloat”, he said, anxiety over the crisis is gradually turning into “real fear”, with many poor people’s fear turning into “pure despair”.

“Germany has been a modern welfare state for many decades. We must not let it quietly turn into a state of beggars because we do not give the poor what they need,” the specialist stressed.

At the same time, he criticised the German coalition government, accusing it of middle- and high-income people benefiting from support measures while the poorest people are “left behind”.
