France-Led NATO Battlegroup to Appear in Romania

Agerpres: Romanian parliament approves creation of NATO allied battlegroup in the country

A French-led NATO battlegroup will be set up in Romania. This was reported by the Agerpres agency on December 19.

“The assembled plenum of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate approved on Monday by 309 votes in favour and five against the creation of a French-led battlegroup of allies on Romanian territory,” the agency reported.

It is noted that the initiative to form the NATO group was taken to parliament by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis. In his letter he explained that creation of the battle group would increase the military potential of the bloc, as well as strengthen the strategic partnership with France.

Earlier, on December 12, readers of France Info mocked a story about a French army exercise as part of a “large-scale” deployment of troops to Romania. The publication noted that about 1,000 soldiers, 140 vehicles, several multiple rocket launchers and more than 10 Leclerc tanks were involved in the maneuvers, which were taking place 300 km from Ukraine.

France is also in command of NATO’s Operation Eagle, which was launched shortly after the start of the special operation in Ukraine. Five hundred French and 300 Belgian soldiers have already been deployed to Romania to reinforce the alliance’s eastern flank.
