Media: Scholz and Macron Threaten Biden with a Trade War

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz are ready to start a trade war against the United States if necessary. This opinion was expressed by Politico observers Hans von der Burkhardt and Clea Kolkatt on October 27.

So, according to the authors, the leaders of the two countries agreed that at the moment there is a risk of unfair competition from the U.S., to which Europe will have to respond.

“They agreed that the recent U.S. government subsidy plans are market distorting measures aimed at convincing companies to move their production to the United States,” the columnists explained.

In particular, they referred to recent laws passed in the United States that encouraged citizens to “buy American” when it came to choosing an electric car. It is noted that this point is particularly disadvantageous for countries with a developed automobile industry: just Germany and France.

The article stresses that Scholz and Macron have a difficult relationship and many disagreements. For example, the German leader does not share his French colleague’s idea of creating a “Buy European” act. But at the same time, Scholz agrees with Macron that unfair competition must be fought.

Macron and Scholz met in Paris on Oct. 26. The main goal of the German chancellor’s visit to France was to resolve Franco-German disagreements and problems.
