“Otherwise a Tsunami Will Hit Us”: the Saxon Prime Minister Has Called for the Resumption of Gas Supplies

Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has called for the resumption of Russian gas supplies to Germany at the end of the conflict in Ukraine. The politician said this in an interview published Sunday, October 23, in the newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

“We need long-term contracts for liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from the United States, Qatar and other Arab countries. We also need to finally start producing our own natural gas in the North Sea. And when (the conflict in Ukraine) is over, we have to use gas from Russia again,” said Kretschmer.

Asked whether he expects the damaged Nord Stream pipeline to be repaired by then, the prime minister said: “We will need pipeline gas, and it can only be supplied if the pipelines are in good working order.

The politician also stated his skepticism about sanctions against Russia, stressing that the measures initiated by the West did not achieve their goal and significantly weakened the German economy.

“Sanctions are always better than using weapons. But they must also have the necessary impact. It should be clear to us what effect the sanctions are having on the German economy. There is a tsunami building up in it right now,” Kretschmer noted.

The Saxon prime minister also called on the German authorities to increase diplomatic pressure on the parties to the Ukrainian conflict in order to launch the negotiation process. According to Kretschmer, Germany should “join with other countries and promote de-escalation through dialogue.

“Joint diplomatic efforts by the EU, the U.S., China, India and Japan are now needed. This war must be stopped,” he argued.
