Head of the Ministry of Far East Development: all ASEAN countries are ready to work with Russia

Head of Ministry of Far East Development says all ASEAN countries are ready to work constructively with Russia

The countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are ready to work with Russia constructively, said Head of the Ministry of Foreign Economic Development Alexei Chekunkov in an interview with RIA Novosti.

According to the minister, the main tool in setting up international ties is competition, so partner contracts that do not include unfriendly Japan can be taken by China, Vietnam and Thailand.

“Asia is big. ASEAN has 600 million people – that’s five Japan’s – and all these countries are ready to work with us on a constructive basis,” Chekunkov said.

Earlier, the Russian Energy Ministry, following a meeting between Dmitry Semenov, director of the ministry’s International Cooperation Department, and the leadership of the ASEAN Secretariat and the ASEAN Energy Centre, said that Russia and the association countries would expand cooperation in the gas and low-carbon technology sectors. A Russia-ASEAN business dialogue is planned for the Eastern Economic Forum.

The EEF will be held from September 5-8 in Vladivostok on the campus of Far Eastern Federal University on Russky Island.

The Government of Primorye has announced that over 20 hotels have been prepared to receive EEF guests

Delegations from unfriendly countries, in particular Japan and South Korea, will arrive at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), Head of the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East Alexei Chekunkov told RIA Novosti.

According to him, for Japan and South Korea, cooperation with Russia is fated because of each other’s proximity and historical and strong economic ties.
