Secret EU Fight over Russia Revealed

Politico says Macron and Scholz are at odds with the Baltics and Poland over peace in Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz are facing hawkish contradictions in the European Union over a settlement in Ukraine. This was the opinion of columnist Mujtaba Rahman in a piece for Politico.

The journalist said that there was a secret struggle and disagreement in the EU over Russia. According to him, Macron and Scholz are hiding from Central and Eastern European countries their position on the situation in Ukraine, which is to achieve peace through diplomacy.

“Behind the public statements of support for Ukraine there is a quiet tug-of-war between Germany, France and – until the resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi – Italy on the one hand, and Poland, the Baltic States, Scandinavia and Finland on the other,” Rahman stressed.

The columnist added that as long as the US continued to support the hostilities in Ukraine, Germany and Poland were unlikely to start stating their position, seeking to leave unity within the European Union.

Earlier, Russian permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) Vasily Nebenzia said that he wanted to resolve the conflict in Ukraine through negotiations. He stressed that the goals of the Russian special operation should be achieved.
