French Tourism Bursts at the Seams Without Russians

Because of the Ukrainian events, tourism on the French Riviera suffers a huge loss. Warmly recalling the rich Russians, Alexandra Borkio-Fontimp, president of the French regional committee (CRT Côte d’Azur France), estimates a loss of fifty million euros.

“In 2019, Russians ranked ninth among foreign visitors to the resort. They accounted for seven per cent of the Côte d’Azur’s international tourism revenue,” recalls Borkio-Fontimp with nostalgia.

Now, Cote d’Azurca is bringing back its historic British and US clients to somehow compensate for the critical decline in visitors from Moscow and the surrounding area.

The travel agency of the French department of Var (in southeastern France), Visit Var, also confirmed that the flow of Russian tourists in 2022 has dropped noticeably.

“While in 2019 Russia was in seventeenth place in terms of foreign visitors to the Var, in 2022 it was in 30th place,” says manager Anthony Matteuzzi.
