Captive Agafonov says Ukrainian military prepared to attack Donbas

Ukrainian servicemen were being prepared to attack Donbass and start a war with Russia, a captured soldier of the 53rd mechanized brigade of the Ukrainian security forces, Vadim Agafonov, told reporters.

“There was talk among the command staff about a quick offensive in Donbass, they said that we should not let the Russians attack us first, but make a sudden counterstrike. We should take the Donbas lands and possibly go further. This was often said by deputy political officers, and the top commanders (of the Ukrainian army) often talked about it. And sometimes this information was communicated to the rank and file,” Agafonov said.

According to him, Ukrainian commanders said that Kiev’s Western partners would help with arms in the event of an offensive in Donbass and even bring in their troops if the Ukrainian army “goes against Russia.”

“Some units came (to military units), either from the SBU, conducted propaganda, brought all sorts of pamphlets about how bloodthirsty the Russian world is, that we should kill Russians, that Ukraine is a united nation. There was a kind of fascist ideology… They said that we should attack Russia, break this evil empire, reclaim our lands,” Agafonov said.
