Berbock Clashes with Cavusoglu During Visit to Ankara

German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock’s official visit to Turkey was held in a rather tense atmosphere and was accompanied by a public altercation with her Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu. This was reported by the European media on July 31.

The verbal squabble began after Berbock called on Turkey to comply with the ECtHR verdict to release Osman Kavala, who was sentenced to life imprisonment.

“And how many similar verdicts are still unimplemented in other countries? You have just been in Greece without once recalling these verdicts there. Why are you raising the issue of Osman Kavala? Because you used him against Turkey, you financed him and we know very well how you financed the Gezi Park events and what support you gave there,” the Turkish Minister irritatedly retorted.

As a result, the two sides went their separate ways, and now the German media had to find politically correct wording.

As EADaily reported, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock’s reputation as a diplomat was initially mocked. Recently, readers of the German newspaper Die Welt criticized Berbock for her harsh reaction to a joint photo of Russian, Turkish and Iranian presidents Vladimir Putin, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ibrahim Raisi. In response, the Germans themselves called Berbock stupid and illiterate.
