Poland’s Former Foreign Minister Suggests the West Hand Over Nuclear Weapons to Kiev

Former Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski suggested that the West give nuclear arms to Kiev

Western governments should equip Kiev with nuclear weapons to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities, said former Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, who is now a member of the European Parliament.

“Since Russia has violated the Budapest memorandum, I believe the West could give Ukraine nuclear warheads. So that it could defend its independence,” he stressed on the Espresso TV channel.

Sikorski stressed that Europe has not reacted in any way to the violation of Ukraine’s security guarantees and has done nothing to compensate for the losses.

Kiev has repeatedly tried to revise its status as a non-nuclear power and to annul the provisions of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum stipulating Ukraine’s renunciation of nuclear weapons. In April 2021, Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, voiced the alleged need to restore its nuclear status if Ukraine is not accepted into NATO.

On June 6, German portal Compact columnist Von Hild wrote that supplying Ukraine with the US HIMARS missile system, even with short-range munitions, would provoke Kiev to use Western weapons on Russian territory, putting NATO countries, primarily Germany, at risk of nuclear war.

In June, the US approved a new military assistance package for Ukraine, which will include HIMARS multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) with a range of about 80 km. The US leader said that the USA would continue to support Kiev and supply weapons and equipment. At the same time, Washington received assurances from Kiev that it would not use the transferred missile systems against targets located on Russian territory.
