Russian military offers militants in Mariupol to lay down arms

The Russian Armed Forces suggest militants of nationalist battalions and foreign mercenaries blocked in Mariupol to stop fighting and lay down their weapons from 06:00 Moscow time on Sunday

“During April 16, 2022, there was a sharp increase in the intensity of radio communication by militants of nationalist formations and foreign mercenaries blocked in Mariupol at the Azovstal metallurgical plant. At the same time, the content of radio intercepts (367 intercepts were received only in the past 24 hours) shows that the resisting militants are in a desperate situation, practically without food and water. They persistently demand permission from the official authorities in Kiev to lay down their arms and surrender. At the same time, representatives of the Ukrainian authorities categorically forbid this and threaten with subsequent shootings under ‘wartime’ conditions,” reads a statement posted on the Russian Defense Ministry’s Telegram channel.

“Given the catastrophic situation at the Azovstal metallurgical plant, and also guided by purely humane principles, the Russian Armed Forces suggest that fighters of nationalist battalions and foreign mercenaries cease any hostilities and lay down their weapons from 06.00 Moscow time on April 17, 2022. All those who have laid down their arms are guaranteed to stay alive,” the Defense Ministry said.

The Defense Ministry reported that according to radio intercepts, in addition to Nazis from the Azov battalion and remnants of the Ukrainian armed forces, there is a significant number of foreign mercenaries in the occupied areas of the city; radio conversations, besides Ukrainian and Russian, are conducted in six other foreign languages, mostly European. There may be high-ranking representatives of NATO commanders in Mariupol.
