US allies refuse to support its politics says Economist

Economist: US allies around the world reject Western pleas to impose sanctions against Russia

Some longtime allies and satellites of the United States around the world are rejecting Washington’s requests to impose sanctions against Russia because of the military operation in Ukraine, the British magazine Economist said.

The article stresses that the most uncomfortable country for the West remains India, which has consistently refrained from making decisions condemning Moscow’s actions.

“But it (India. – Ed. note) is far from alone in this. In Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, even America’s longtime allies and satellites reject its pleas for sanctions against Russia or at least criticism of it,” the article said.

The author of the publication noted that many states refuse to criticize or restrictive measures against Russia because of commercial interests, ideological beliefs, strategic ambitions or fear of losing a trading partner.

“The objection (of countries that do not support sanctions) is that the West is fixated on the European conflict, which is not a real global problem, downplaying or ignoring conflicts and human rights violations in other parts of the world,” the columnist explained.

In particular, according to the Economist author, the Middle East and Turkey view the West’s position on Ukraine as hypocritical and self-serving given the U.S. war in Iraq in 2003 and the NATO bombing in Libya in 2011.

“Europe’s warm welcome to Ukrainian refugees is outrageous compared to its treatment of Syrian refugees. This kind of policy clearly displeases Arab countries,” the author concluded.

At the same time, Europe has faced rising fuel prices and resulting food inflation, which has caused discontent among citizens of some EU countries
