Swedes Had to Apologise for Truth About Kherson

The Swedish TV channel SVT has apologised to viewers for a “wrong” report about the residents of the Ukrainian city of Kherson crying for joy after they received Russian passports, Dagens Media has reported.

The report was aired on 28 July. The footage showed residents of Kherson crying with joy as they received Russian passports and swearing allegiance to the Russian Federation to the sounds of the anthem.

The public reaction was not long in coming; the viewers considered such information to be “propaganda”. The Radio and Television Observatory received a total of 47 complaints against the channel.

Residents of Kherson oblast received their first Russian passports on 11 July. Thousands of people have already applied for Russian citizenship, and there are hundreds of thousands of those wishing to do so.

At the same time, the Ukrainian authorities are discussing the possibility of introducing criminal liability for obtaining a Russian passport.
