IAEA Reports Real Threat to Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant

Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is threatened by a real danger after the last backup power line was disconnected, said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi. This was reported by the press service of the IAEA.

“Europe’s largest nuclear power plant has lost a key source of electricity … The events once again emphasize the very real danger facing this facility,” the statement said.

The agency’s press service also said that over the past week IAEA experts have heard daily explosions at different distances from the nuclear power plant.

The 330 kV high-voltage power supply line “Ferosplavnaya-1”, operating from the Ukrainian side, was disconnected from the Zaporozhye NPP in the morning of 4 April. The operation of the power plant units has been stopped, five of them are in the state of “cold shutdown”, one – in the state of “hot shutdown”.

“Ferosplavnaya-1” was the last high-voltage line supplying the power plant. At the end of March, the 750 kV “Dneprovskaya” line was also disconnected from the Zaporozhye NPP.

Authorities in Ukraine’s regions repeatedly reported damage to power facilities as a result of explosions in March. In early April, the Ukrainian electricity company DTEK said that it had lost 80 per cent of its generating capacity after the attacks on its thermal power plants

The Russian Defence Ministry stressed that the strikes targeted Ukrainian military and energy facilities and related infrastructure.
