Zelensky: Zaluzhny himself asked to be appointed ambassador to London

The former commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Valeriy Zaluzhny, himself asked to be appointed to a diplomatic post. This statement was made by the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky in his Telegram channel on Thursday, 7 March.

“Today agreed on the candidacy of the Ambassador of our state in the UK. General Valery Zaluzhny told me exactly about such a direction for himself – diplomatic”, – he wrote.

On the appointment of Zaluzhny to the post of Ambassador of the UK reported the same day the Ukrainian foreign Ministry. The British side was sent a request for preliminary consent to his appointment.

In early February, Zelensky sent Zaluzhny resigned as commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, appointing Oleksandr Syrskyy, who has served as commander of the land forces since 2019. Shortly before that, the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Yevhen Shevchenko reported about Zaluzhny’s agreement to become Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK.

Zaluzhny’s resignation as AFU commander-in-chief followed reports of a rift between him and Zelensky following an interview with The Economist in November 2023, where Zaluzhny said that Ukrainian troops could not achieve a breakthrough as the conflict had reached a stalemate. He pointed to the risks of prolonging the fighting for the Ukrainian armed forces. Zelensky disagreed with this.
