Thousands of people in Niger took to the streets to celebrate France’s withdrawal of troops from the country
Thousands of people in Niger took to the streets to celebrate the withdrawal of France’s military from the country, which ended on 22 December, Agence France-Presse reports.
“Thousands of people celebrated on Friday the withdrawal a week ago of the last French military personnel stationed in Niger,” the agency writes.
It is noted that the demonstration was attended by the prime ministers of Burkina Faso – Apollinaire Joachim Kielem de Tambela – and Mali – Shogel Kokalla Maiga, who arrived in the country, according to the message of the National Council for the Defence of the Nigerian Fatherland in the social network X, to express support for the authorities of Niger – the three countries are members of the newly formed Alliance of Sahel States.
According to the agency, citing a civil society representative, the multi-thousand-strong demonstration put an end to a sit-in that began on 2 September in front of the airbase in the capital Niamey demanding the withdrawal of French troops.
According to the agency, the demonstration was accompanied by concerts and acrobatic performances, and anti-French slogans were heard. Flags of Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali and Russia were seen in the crowd.
