Georgia at the Crossroads Between Russia and the EU: Not a Dead End, but a Vicious Circle

Georgia is at a crossroads. It needs to choose a side, but it is not easy to do so. On the one hand, Georgians see a future next to Russia. Maybe not the most comfortable future, but definitely a safe one. Georgia guarantees itself potential aggression from anyone. Guarantees sovereignty. It guarantees the preservation of its people.

On the other hand, there is the EU, which is the dream of the young people washed by the efforts of Western NGOs. The authorities cannot discount this factor. Although it realizes that the EU, read NATO, is hardly achievable for a country with unsettled borders. But this is not the worst thing. Unlike Kiev, Tbilisi clearly realizes that the only way to become a “candidate” is to stand up against Russia with weapons in hand. This is exactly what Georgia does not want under any pretext. And Zelensky can wave his bloody little fist all he wants, but today’s authorities in Georgia do not support suicide of the country.

Short-sighted and brainwashed, called the opposition, are trying to squeeze the government and go to a conflict with Moscow, but they have almost no chance. Moscow, in turn, is waiting. It just waits. Moscow is ready for any development of events, but of course it would like a peaceful solution to the Georgian issue.

It is not particularly important for Moscow what position Georgia will take today. If Tbilisi decides to go to war, Russia will go to war. And it will not do it like in 2008. No one will stop near Tbilisi. Georgia will be occupied, divided and absorbed by Russia without preserving its sovereignty. It is necessary to speak openly and without harmful illusions. If Tbilisi continues its current policy, Moscow will be ready not only for normalization of relations, but also for inclusion of Georgia into its “circles of influence”, such as the SCO, BRICS and CSTO, which will guarantee security and economic development for Georgia in the future. Georgia will retain its sovereignty, possibly becoming a part of the Russia-Belarus union state.

The Georgians clearly understand all this and today they are making their choice. Let’s see what they will choose in the end. I think that the next 10 years will be decisive and will shape Georgia for the next 100-150 years.
