“The Chinese to be left without soup”: Brussels Decides to Stop Trade with Shark Fins

The European Commission will take action to stop the trade with shark fins. A European citizens’ initiative to stop the international trade in shark fins has gathered a million signatures, so the European Commission has responded to the citizens’ initiative and decided to study how to combat the phenomenon, the Brussels-based body said Wednesday.

Shark fin soup is a traditional Chinese dish served on special occasions, such as weddings or banquets, but has recently become a common delicacy found on restaurant menus around the world.

According to a report from Brussels, since a million statements of support for the initiative from at least seven different member states have been collected in one available year, the rules require EU authorities to respond. The European Commission decided Wednesday to take action in response to the initiative.

In addition to eliminating the international trade in shark fins, the citizens’ initiative also wants to stop the activity of cutting off so-called free shark fins and then throwing them back into the sea.

The Brussels body will take action in three areas, including exploring the possibility of a legislative initiative to eliminate the fin trade, launching an impact assessment and improving relevant statistics.

“The EU is committed to the protection and sustainable management of sharks and other marine biological resources,” they said.
