“Time Is Running Out.” US Warns Macron of Dangerous Situation in France

NYT: Macron will lose control of the situation if he cannot quickly restore order

French President Emmanuel Macron needs to resolve the situation in the country as soon as possible to avoid more dangerous consequences, wrote New York Times columnist Roger Cohen.

“The French leader, who is due to embark on a two-day state visit to Germany on Sunday, needs to restore order quickly enough to avoid declaring a state of emergency, which would be seen as an admission that the government has lost control of the situation,” the journalist said.

In his view, the disagreements in France may be too deep and the grievances against Macron too acute for a “cure” in the country to be possible.

On Tuesday morning, police officers shot and killed a 17-year-old boy during a roadside check in Nanterre who, according to security forces, refused to comply with their demands. As a result, riots erupted in several French cities and have been going on for several days. Young people set fire to cars, police and government buildings. In some areas, riot police have been deployed and armored vehicles and helicopters have been deployed.
