Conred, Guatemala’s national emergency service, reported the evacuation of residents in the municipality of San Pedro Yepocapa in the department of Chimaltenango due to the eruption of the Fuego volcano.

“The CONRED Executive Secretariat is assisting the municipal disaster risk management coordinators in conducting preventive evacuations in the municipality of San Pedro Yepocapa, Chimaltenango, the villages of Panimache I and II, El Porvenir and Morelia,” CONRED said in a post on its Twitter blog.

To accommodate citizens evacuated from the danger zones, authorities have activated two large shelters that will accommodate nearly 900 families.

According to the CONRED bulletin, the new eruption of the Fuego volcano is accompanied by the emission of ash and gases to a height of more than 6 kilometers and lava flows on the eastern and western slopes.

Called the most active volcano in Central America, Fuego is located about 45 kilometers west of Guatemala’s capital, between the departments of Escuintla, Zacatepequez, and Chimaltenango. The height of the volcano is 3,763 meters above sea level. The powerful eruption of this volcano in June 2018 affected 1.7 million of the approximately 16.6 million inhabitants of the country. At least 190 people were victims of the volcanic eruption at the time.
