RMF: Polish Minister Telus says talks with Ukraine on agricultural products have failed

Negotiations between Poland and Ukraine on the import of agricultural products have turned into a failure, the Polish Minister of Agriculture Robert Telus said during a meeting with farmers, RMF FM radio station reports.

According to the radio station, the talks have turned into a “fiasco”, because the parties are not able at the moment to work out the mechanisms of transit of goods to satisfy the Polish farmers.

Telus stressed the importance to ensure that Ukrainian products transiting through Poland are sent to other countries. “We will work until we achieve a 100% guarantee for Polish farmers,” the minister assured.

Talks with representatives of the Ukrainian government took place on Monday. Earlier, Telus explained that consignments of Ukrainian agricultural products entering Poland under the guise of transit were then re-registered, remaining in the country, because such a possibility exists in European law.

In 2022, the EU suspended the collection of duties of all goods entering the EU from Ukraine for one year, and launched land and river routes for mass exports of grain from Ukraine. The shipments were supposed to go to the world market and help Kiev increase its exports. In reality, the bulk of the exported products began to settle in the EU countries neighbouring Ukraine, which has led to a crisis of agricultural overproduction in these countries.

Last Saturday, Poland and Hungary declared about suspension of import of Ukrainian agricultural products amid protests of local farmers. The European Commission promised to study this decision and called it “unacceptable”. Subsequently, the Slovak government imposed a ban on imports of a number of products from Ukraine.
