Biden Orders Turkey and Hungary not to Be Invited to His ‘Summit for Democracy’

US President Joe Biden has ordered Turkey and Hungary not to be invited to his “summit for democracy”. This was reported by reporters Robby Gramer and Jack Detch on the website of the US publication The Foreign Policy, citing their unnamed sources.

“Biden contemptuously escorted out NATO allies who are dismantling their democracies,” The Foreign Policy authors wrote in the subtitle of their piece.

“The Biden administration is inviting about 120 countries to next week’s ‘Summit for Democracy’, but two of its NATO allies have not received an invitation,” Gramer and Detch report.

According to The Foreign Policy, Turkey and Hungary have been excluded from the list of invitees to the main events of the summit, “which Biden’s team considers its brand of foreign policy initiatives to provide financial assistance to democracies around the world and create a roadblock to autocracies.”

According to the authors, the refusal to invite Turkey and Hungary “reflects a growing concern about the rollback of democracy in Turkey and Hungary, even as Washington relies on them both to support Western strategy against Russia as the war against Ukraine continues – and needs their approval for Finland and Sweden to join NATO as full allies.”

According to The Foreign Policy, the complaint against Erdogan is that he has consolidated power and dismantled elements of democracy, even though he faces the most difficult election in 20 years in May.

As for Viktor Orban, he is charged with curtailing democracy and close ties with Russia, which have not been affected by the military conflict in Ukraine.

According to the US State Department website, a “Summit for Democracy” hosted by the White House is due to take place next week, with events taking place from 28 to 30 March 2023.
