London Uses Cunning to Prevent Russia’s Participation in the Olympics

London urged the sponsors of Games 2024 to put pressure on the IOC concerning the admission of Russia to the Olympic Games

The British Government appealed to the major sponsors of the Olympic Games to put pressure on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the issue of participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the Games in Paris, reports the Guardian.

On January 25, the Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) supported the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions in neutral status, while proposing not to admit athletes who actively supported the special operation in Ukraine. Later, the governments of more than 30 countries opposed the participation of Russians and Belarusians in the Olympics. IOC head Thomas Bach said that governments should not decide who can participate in international competitions.

“British Culture (Media and Sport) Minister Lucy Fraser has asked British leaders of the IOC’s international partners, including Coca-Cola, Intel, Samsung and Visa, to pressure the IOC on a number of significant concerns… about a possible softening of the ban,” the publication said in a statement.

According to the letter of Fraser, cited by the newspaper, London opposes the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the Olympics until the IOC has sorted out the “significant lack of clarity on the working model of ‘neutrality'”.

The Olympic Games in Paris will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
