The UK to Reject Argentina’s Claims to the Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands (Malvinas) belong to the UK. This was stated by British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley via Twitter in response to the denunciation of the treaty on the islands by the Argentine Foreign Office.

Earlier, Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero notified the UK about the denunciation of the Foradori-Dancan agreement, which deals with the administration of the islands area. The agreement was to establish a mechanism for dialogue between Argentina and the UK and to improve the economic situation in the Falkland Islands.

“The Falkland Islands are British. The people of the islands have the right to decide their future – they have chosen to remain a British overseas territory,” Cleverley said.

Britain annexed the Falkland Islands in 1833. They have been the subject of a territorial dispute between Argentina and Britain for nearly 200 years. A war broke out between the countries in April 1982, with Britain winning.

In 2013, a referendum was held on the islands, with a majority of residents voting in favour of keeping the island under the British crown. Argentina did not recognise the referendum result.
